Crystal PM introduced an instant messenger capability within Crystal in version 4.2.2, available for download on 1/6/16.
It is easy to figure out but I have included instructions below:
At the top, click “Messages”. If “Options” is the only option, hover on it and click “Turn on Messaging”
Click back on “Messages”, click on “Instant Messaging”, then click “Contacts List”.
Check the name(s) or computer station(s) you want to message then click “New IM Thread”.
Type your message and hit “Send”.
Your message will pop up on the recipients monitor and they will have the ability to respond back and forth to your messages.

I'm not so sure...4.4.9 and when I double click to start a thread, it does not put the user I selected in the recipient box. I just keep getting new IM tabs. We would like the font to be a little larger, or adjustable. One of our staff has a hard time with tiny print. Pop up is good now.

Update - I did get one to work, not sure how. Will keep playing with it...

Is there a way to use the Instant messenger with another location? We have two offices more than 25 miles apart and I wanted to know if there was a way to communicate through the instant messenger rather than downloading an outside messenger.

You would only be able to use the messenger for two offices if they share the same database. If not, then you'll need to use a different program outside of Crystal.

Anyway we can get the instant message to pop to the front of the recipient's screen? When we use it the recipient has to actually select 'messages' which sort of defeats the purpose. It's also pretty darn slow... though that could be because of our internet connection.

We bypass CPM's messenger altogether.. Third party does it better. We use OfficePopup.. Incredibly simple software, and that is the best part about it. No Frills, but it gets the job done. Pops up on top of all current windows so recipient will see every message. It does cost money, but if I remember right it is not that much. You may need your IT professional to set up an exception if you have a firewall on all of your client workstations. download.cnet.com/OfficePopup/3000-2085_4-10108579.html

We had been using MessagePal but it isn't compatible with Win10 and there doesn't seem to be any support on their site, even though I bought my (inexpensive) license only a couple of years ago. The OfficePopup site www.lanmessenger.com/ doesn't look like it's been kept up. The copywrite date is 2008 and the most recent OS mentioned is Win XP. Marcia

We are definitely using it on Windows 10.. I should have done some minor research before posting to make sure the company was still selling the product, because we bought our licensed copy over 10 years ago, and continue to load it onto new workstations via a .exe file on a thumb-drive. I am unsure about how the process would work now seeing how out dated their website is!

Is it possible to retain the text from a thread? It looks as though leaving a text box and attempting to re-open a thread results in a clear slate.

So I have personally found the CPM messenger to be relatively uneffective for many of the reasons previously mentioned in this thread. I mentioned above the 3rd party messenger we use instead, and it works great for us but it is an older software and I am not even sure they sell it anymore... Anyway, I just wanted to follow up and say that although I have not tried any other messaging software, I did a quick google search and it seems like there are quite a few LAN Messaging options out there... If you are not happy with the options CPM messenger gives you, I would recommend branching out and trying something different until CPM revamps their messenger. This is a good comparison Wiki link that breaks down a lot of the information in a very organized way (If you are Type A personality like me, you will like this lol) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_LAN_messengers

I LIKE FREE AND THEY DO POP UP OVER TOP BUT GO BEHIND QUICK IF YOU MOVE AT SAME TIME OR JUST SHRINK, INSTEAD OF CLOSING WINDOW. CLOSE WINDOW WILL ALWAYS POP UP IN FOREGROUND, SHRUNK WINDOW GOES BEHIND. CLOSING DOES NOT REMOVE TREAD, IF SOMEONE ELSE IS STILL USING IT.
