We’re training new staff and ran into a couple of situations where we had duplicate patients created. I was afraid to use the Merge Patient function (on the Patient/Additional Info tab) so I decided to do a bunch of sample merges to see exactly how it works. I was keeping track of a ton of combinations and could have easily messed something up in my analysis but this is what I have come up with (as of V 4.4.29).
Start the process by clicking the Merge Patient button on the Additional Info tab of the patient you want don’t want (the SOURCE pt). This patient will be inactivated by the Merge. The DESTINATION patient is selected after the Merge Patient button is selected and will be the active patient that contains the merged data. But it’s not that simple.
ALL the data on the SOURCE Patient Info, Additional Info, Insurance and Notes tabs REMAINS there so *I* would recommend putting "Duplicate" in the street address of the SOURCE patient after the Merge. That way if they both get inactivated/activated and you need to search for that patient, you can see which is the correct one from the search table.
Moved Items
All Medical Records, Files, Invoices, Orders and Prescriptions are REMOVED from the SOURCE patient and MOVED to the DESTINATION patient.
Copied Items
In general, the data in the SOURCE Patient Info, Additional Info, Insurance and Notes tabs will be copied over to those fields in the DESTINATION patient, with the DESTINATION data having priority. If the SOURCE and DESTINATION have different data for a field, the DESTINATION data wins. The data from both will NOT be combined in the DESTINATION field.
For the following items, the SOURCE patient data DOES NOT copy over to the DESTINATION data even if the DESTINATION field is empty:
If Patient Referral in the DESTINATION patient says None, it will copy a Professional Referral or Other Referral from the SOURCE but it will NOT copy over a named Patient Referral.
Hope that helps someone.
