Hello, We have a server based version of CrystalPm and want to access computer remotely. There are too many companies to choose from and some are pretty expensive. Any recommendations for secure remote access? Thank you.

Are you just wanting to access one computer remotely? (connect to your work computer from home or something similar) If that's the case, the Remote Desktop that comes on Windows works great.
If you are looking to have your server moved to a location other than your office or have a second location where you want to share the database, you would be essentially setting up your own cloud and would need to have Windows Server as the operating system on the server. This allows multiple computers to connect.

I use a program called Team Viewer and it works flawlessly. I can sign into all computers at work, including the server, from anywhere I want. They have two versions, the free one (that I use) and one you can buy which is quite expensive. I have always used the free version and it does everything I need. I can even sign into employee computers from home to see what's going on.

Scroll to the bottom of the page for the free version.

As Erica said, the Remote Desktop that comes with windows is sufficient for connecting to a work computer from home.. There are an abundance of tutorials online for setting up RDP's. I use this because I don't have to include a third party, but it does require some basic levels of computing knowledge to set up.
Third party's will generally provide more flexibility (like the ability to access a work computer from your iPad, iPhone, or other devices with GoToMyPC), albeit while sacrificing security on some level.. Generally speaking the more reputable companies like Team Viewer and GoToMyPC provide adequate levels of encryption, and Team Viewer actually has HIPAA Certification, but obviously remoting in through a third party opens the door, even if it is just little bit.
Also, if you are going to remote into your office from home I would strongly recommend remoting into one of your client workstations as opposed to remoting directly into the server.

As Erica said, the Remote Desktop that comes with windows is sufficient for connecting to a work computer from home.. The remote systems won't wake up a sleeping system will they? I currently use Teamviewer on my server because I was thinking it wouldn't work if the computer went into sleep mode and the server is always running. Is the Windows Remote Desktop any more secure than Teamviewer? Marcia

Yes, remote desktop (RDP) will wake a sleeping computer. You won't be able to power it on/restart/power off though. When I log into Crystal from my home computer (using RDP) I have to enter 3 passwords. One for the RDP session, one for my work computer and another one to get into Crystal. There are additional measures you can take to make RDP more secure here is one of the many articles I found: www.howtogeek.com/175087/how-to-enable-and-secure-remote-desktop-on-windows/You might want to consult with your IT person. In my opinion, RDP is the best way to connect. It's faster than VPN, it's FREE!, you don't rely on third party software so it won't have any downtime. I hope this helps!

I currently use Teamviewer on my server because I was thinking it wouldn't work if the computer went into sleep mode and the server is always running. Is the Windows Remote Desktop any more secure than Teamviewer? Marcia Team viewer has recently had clients attacked with ransomware viruses, however it should be noted according to their investigations it was not Teamviewer's software that was at fault, but rather user error. www.teamviewer.com/en/company/press/statement-on-ransomware-infections-via-teamviewer/Additionally Team Viewer is also HIPAA certified: www.teamviewer.com/en/company/press/teamviewers-now-hipaa-hitech-and-soc2-certified/ In my opinion (Not an IT professional, but I am an IT enthusiast) I think both RDP and TeamViewer will provide adequate security. Team Viewer encrypts the data packets sent over its networks, and they have built in security features to prevent brute force attacks and other nefarious online theft techniques. It also provides access to your computer from other devices like a phone or tablet and is in general just a more flexibility technology I think. I still choose to use RDP because it meets the needs I have of being able to access a workstation from home, its free, and I don't have to include a middle man (even though I personally don't think it is a huge deal if you do if the middle man uses sophisticated encryption methods like TV does). No matter what, the client computer is still vulnerable to human error.. If you open the wrong email attachment, or allow the wrong script to be ran by clicking on a bad link then the computer can still be infected whether using RDP, TeamViewer, or nothing at all.

We have been using TeamViewer for several years at our second location. In the past month we have been having problems printing the RX and the invoice out of crystal to the remote printer. Everything else prints fine. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I have tried updating TeamViewer and Crystal on all the machines, and it has not helped.

Team Viewer has instructions on their website regarding how to print to a local printer while inside a remote session which can be found here: www.teamviewer.com/en/help/1058-wie-funktioniert-ferndrucken-mit-teamviewerIt does mention that certain printer drivers are not compatible, so that could be a source of the issue as well

Any recommendations for secure remote access? Thank you. I log into my network via a VPN and then use remote desktop to log onto any computer I need to work on. The VPN adds an extra layer of security and is through my router. Works flawlessly and is pretty easy to set up. Hope this helps!

Teamviewer does NOT work on server editions of computers with the newest updates. It will work on ANY OTHER computer in office so I have it set up on DR. Office, Lab and front desk. This way i can fix any computer issues while at home...and had to, often when I was laid up for months. I have a "shared server drive on ALL the computers so I have access to the server, anyway.

As you need to gain safe remote access that is also not costly, so I would suggest Remote Utilities to you. It is a free of cost remote access program with some amazing features. It operates by coupling binary remote PCs. You can easily control a total of 10 computers with Remote Utilities. Just install a share of Remote Utilities named Host on a Windows PC so you could gain access permanently. You also have the choice to just initiate Agent, which gives an impulsive support without installing anything it can be started from a flash drive. Find out a lot more about remote access through appuals.com/how-to-remotely-access-a-computer-thats-been-turned-off-or-has-crashed/ . It has a remote task manager, remote file launcher, and power control for the sake of remote restarting or WOL, remote terminal, file transfer, system info manager, text chat, remote registry access and remote webcam options. Apart from the above features, it aids remote printing and inspecting numerous monitors.
