Currently, the diagnosis/procedure codes used in the invoice are stored independently from the diag/proc codes in the medical records. That means they don't necessarily match, which is bad. If we could replace the temporary one-way routing slip with a single log that would hold all the diagnosis codes, procedure codes and the associated diagnoses for that exam encounter and KEEP them, you could edit it from billing or med recs but the displayed data would be the same from both. When you create an invoice the data would import. If data was changed after an invoice was created, you could get a pop-up that a change was made so you could regenerate the invoice (like we currently do with the CMS claim forms). Invoices could be "locked" once a claim has been filed so you know that a corrected claim needs to be done. You could still track if there are any encounters that have not been invoiced as is now down with open routing slips.
A master list of each diagnosis with the initial date assigned and status (similar to the live medications list) would be a lot more helpful that the current list in the med rec Diags button that lists all diagnosis codes entered in the med recs (not the inv) for every exam. We could then check off the codes we want for the current encounter.
Here's a Youtube video I made of a combo diagnosis list and search function I had in my old software that somewhat demonstrates what I am talking about. Note: on the initial Pt screen it says 9 diagnoses but only 3 show up in the transaction screen because I deleted a bunch and edited that out.
I know this is not a simple fix but, IMO, we need a single system of dealing with diagnosis codes instead of the hodgepodge that we currently have. Editing diagnosis codes from the invoice is almost impossible. There's a really nice search in the routing slip now (though not quite as good as mine ;-) but diagnosis codes added there are not added to the med rec. You can also import the diagnosis codes from the last invoice on the routing slip but only works when the pt is back for the problem and it still doesn't come over to the med recs. The F9 search in the med recs is much improved but the search in the routing slip is far better because you can see the list change as you type in the search terms so you can see if you need to add more or change terms.
