My optician was wondering if there was a way that we could add a barcode scanner into crystal, is that an option or would it have to be interfaced with another company?

we have a barcode scanner and its really easy to install. you can get any barcode scanner and crystal pm can help walk you through it but I believe its just "plug and play"

Plug and play is correct. The scanners act like a keyboard, so make sure that the keyboard focus is in the correct box, then zap.

Do you use it just for glasses inventory, for Contact Lenses, or other things too? We currently don't have one; we just manually enter in frame information using the UPC. 99% of the time after entering in basic frame info. a database we link with finds the frame info. and populates the rest of the data in. The company is called FramesData (https://www.framesdata.com/) which we subscribe with and they send a CD once a month to us and we upload it to CrystalPM. Thanks.

I can't speak to that specific office, but I know that offices use the barcode label printing feature in crystal to put barcodes on many different items from frames and contacts to vitamin supplements and candy bars. The barcode sticker encodes a number and when the barcode reader reads that barcode, it decodes the number and acts like someone typed those numbers into their keyboard. If you are currently typing in a UPC number, you could easily scan a label with the scanner and it will be fast and accurate for getting that number into Crystal. For items that are not frames, I think they use a label with a numeric billing code on it and scan them directly into an invoice.

we don't subscribe to frames data bc it's expensive and crystal pm can do the same thing (with a little work but worth the savings!) without the extra cost hence we love crystal pm!
we use the random barcode number generator in the inventory to create the UPC number then fill in all the necessary data (ie frame name, color, size, price, etc) and use the barcode template to generate what we want to include on the barcode when it prints out.
we use barcodes for frames, accessories and some contacts that we sell in stock. when patient purchas these we just scan the barcode and everything auto populates on the invoices
all this without costing you extra to integrate unlike other EMR. WE LOVE CRYSTAL PM!!! all you have to purchase if a barcode scanner and a barcode printer. and the staff at crystal pm was so honest and didn't try to sell us anything. they told us we can buy any scanner and it was true, we found some affordable and decent ones on amazon.

I was helping an office onsite and we ran into the same situation. We plugged it in and it wouldn't scan. Then I realized it came with a USB drive to install the software on the computer first. So if this is a new scanner, be sure to read the manual (what I should have done, haha) and install the appropriate software before using.

I probably should be clear about what I said before..the scanner was purchased a couple years ago and has worked fine scanning (linked to Quickbooks software) frames etc. So the scanner is still kinda new. just didnt want to go and buy another one and have the same problem ..I have already spoken with Crystal tech dept ..wont scan the Crystal generated tags but will scan previous tags made thru Quickbooks?..Thinking maybe a set up issue>
Not sure,,but I thought I would ask again..if anyone out there knows how to possibly resolve this or..I will just give in an try another scanner

So there is really no set up with the barcode scanners. If it scans barcodes from QB and other products from the store, it should scan the Crystal barcodes as well. My worry would be that the label printer you are using isn't printing out the labels with a sharp enough resolution for the scanner to read it. This typically is a label printer issue, not a Crystal issue. I would suggest trying to print a barcode label from the manufacturers software and see if that will read through the scanner.

Hi all, It is always preferable to use Dymo label software generated barcodes selected via insert>barcode object in the Dymo label software. They may be modified by right clicking them. If you require any further service you may contact us via www.dymo.com and your respective country and/or language. Then you may go to 'support'. We are always happy to be of service to our customers. Kind regards, Paul Dymo Customer Service

Thanks Paul and welcome to the forum! It's great to see a vendor rep here!
Just an FYI, our default Crystal label printing feature was designed specifically around the Dymo Turbo 450 paired with the ArchCrown DT390 label. The default settings in Crystal work perfectly 99% of the time. We do also allow the import of a Dymo .label template if the office decides to use their own label.
If you ever have any questions around the integration or need a demonstration, please let me know and we'd be happy to assist!

Hello Everyone ..yesterday I did speak with the Dymo folks ( Iam using the Dymo 450 turbo labelwriter with the DT390 labels as suggested ) and they tested the dymo template and I was able to print and use my existing scanner...I called tech support back and explained that I did what was suggested and can they help me figure this out one more time. I spoke with Jessica..and she helped me get the labels done,,different format Crystal template set at (UPCA - EAN 13 and the margins set for UPC at 1.00,, Height at 20 and Left Margin at 0 )..but they can be scanned now..very glad it works..I probably could just enter the frame info and not have used the scanner.but I do already have one. .so why not try and use it? ..helps searching for the frames alot easier. Thank you to the tech team at Crystal..you guys are great!
