The occasion of the first and only to date exhibition of my photographs in a wellknown gallery in Athens I had written a text in which I supported my views on photographic exhibitions in comparison and contrast with visual exhibitions while also expressing my fears and the reservations that years in contact with this area I had accumulated. Since then I don't think my views have changed but I have found that there is something more that surprises many wellintentioned viewers. And this is how I choose to display photos. Without a doubt the influenced than other arts by the circumstances and the way it is presented mainly due to the ambiguity surrounding its identity.
Makes sense that the way in which I generally tend to display my photographs and the photographs of the exhibitions I curate provokes the disagreement of many experts and especially architects gallerists and art curators. The main disagreements have to do with the sizes of the photos with their number and with e-commerce photo editing the distances between them. Disputes reasonable and not negligible. I actually avoid huge prints which for many and not just exhibition reasons are extremely fashionable these days. In addition I choose to show a larger number of photos and at closer distances than is usual in the rest of the exhibitions.
Without a doubt of course these choices of mine are partly determined by the dimensions of the exhibition space although this is not enough in itself to answer the dissenters. What on the contrary I wish to underline is that my above preferences are not arbitrary but stem from the views I hold regarding the identity and function of photography. The viewer of a photograph at least in my opinion is not looking at an object but a work of art namely an essentially immaterial image. Her material imprint functions merely as a vehicle for conveying opinions and emotions.
